RNA-protein interaction data, as well as focused target-gene approaches, to understand the role of RNA-based mechanisms in the initiation and progression of brain tumours (Vinel et al., Nat. Commun. 2021; Badodi et al., Nat. Commun. 2021; Dodel et al., 2024; Babaei et al., 2026).
While most current therapies focus on targeting cancer-related proteins, this project will address the role of RNA-based mechanisms and their therapeutic targeting in glioblastoma. In particular, we will focus on how long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) and RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) contribute to glioblastoma, with the ultimate goal of developing new RNA-based strategies targeting lncRNAs or RBPs, thereby opening new therapeutic avenues for glioblastoma patients.
We will use molecular biology, RNA biology, cell biology, next-generation sequencing, genomics, proteomics, and biochemical methods. There will also be the opportunity to be involved in and contribute to the computational analysis of next-generation sequencing datasets. All applicants should have a strong motivation for pursuing an ambitious research agenda in an international and competitive research environment.

Academic Entry Requirements
This studentship is open to graduates with
- a 2:1 or 1st degree in a related subject, with an interest in brain tumourigenesis and experience in RNA biology, cell biology, or computer science
English Language Requirements
Applicants for whom English is not a first language will also require a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 (with 6.0 in the written component) or equivalent, unless your undergraduate degree was studied in, and awarded by, an English speaking country.
Fee Status
The funding for this studentship only covers tuition fees at the Home rate. Overseas applicants are welcome to apply, but will be required to fund the difference in tuition fees.
Funding Notes
The studentship includes the following funding:
- A tax-free annual stipend of £23,000 per annum (for 4 years)
- Tuition fees at the Home rate* (for 3 years)
- Project consumables (£12,000 per annum for 3 years)
