About Marcia

Marcia Linn is the Evelyn Lois Corey Professor of Instructional Science, specializing in science and technology, in the Berkeley School of Education at the University of California, Berkeley. She serves as Chair of the Graduate Group in Science and Mathematics Education (SESAME). Linn earned her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from Stanford University, where she worked with Lee J. Cronbach. She began her career at UC Berkeley in 1970 as a research psychologist at the Lawrence Hall of Science and has been a professor in the Graduate School of Education since 1989. Early in her career, she spent a year in Geneva working with Jean Piaget, served as a Fulbright Professor in Israel, and spent a year at University College London. Linn has been a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences three times and a Writing Resident at the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center twice.

Her research centers on the use of technology, including artificial intelligence, to support science teaching and learning. She developed the Knowledge Integration pedagogy, which is widely used in education, and directs the Web-based Inquiry Science Environment (WISE) for inquiry-based science education. Linn's interests include science education, computer-mediated learning, assessment, cognitive development, curriculum design, diversity, gender equity, professional development, and policy analysis. She is a member of the National Academy of Education and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Psychological Association, Association for Psychological Science, American Educational Research Association, and International Society of the Learning Sciences. She has served as President of the International Society of the Learning Sciences, Chair of the AAAS Education Section, and on boards of AAAS, Educational Testing Service Graduate Record Examination, McDonnell Foundation Cognitive Studies in Education Practice, and National Science Foundation Education and Human Resources. Major awards include the National Association for Research in Science Teaching Award for Lifelong Distinguished Contributions to Science Education, American Educational Research Association Willystine Goodsell Award, and Council of Scientific Society Presidents first award for Excellence in Educational Research. Key publications include books such as Computers, Teachers, Peers (2000), Internet Environments for Science Education (2004), Designing Coherent Science Education (2008), WISE Science (2009), and Science Teaching and Learning: Taking Advantage of Technology to Promote Knowledge Integration (2011). She chairs the Technology, Education—Connections series for Teachers College Press.
