Exercise and diet are primary strategies for obesity management, yet weight loss is often limited by metabolic and behavioural compensation. Behavioural compensations, such as increased energy intake and decreased non-exercise physical activity (NEPA), significantly attenuate the energy deficit created by structured exercise). While some researchers have proposed a constrained energy model, the current consensus suggests that compensation mechanisms moderate total expenditure through a complex interplay of physiological and psychological factors.
This project investigates these mechanisms by integrating physiological markers with psychological frameworks. This PhD project aims to:
- Examine psychological predictors of compensatory behaviours following exercise.
- Experimentally test the role of self-licensing in post-exercise eating.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of behavioural interventions in reducing compensatory behaviours.
The successful candidate will gain hands-on training in: Experimental design and behavioural intervention development, Advanced data collection techniques, Psychological assessment, Data analysis and interpretation, Ethical research practice.
This project offers a unique opportunity to contribute to public health by improving the effectiveness of exercise interventions for weight management. Ideal candidates will have a background in psychology, sport science, or health sciences, and a keen interest in behavioural research.
