At Philipps-Universität Marburg, Faculty of Medicine, and the Universitätsklinikum Gießen und Marburg (UKGM), Marburg site, Department of Pneumology, Intensive Care and Sleep Medicine, a Professorship (W2) for Translational Pneumology is to be filled at the earliest possible date.
We are seeking an outstanding clinician-scientist (m/f/d) with a clear translational profile in the field of pneumology. The professorship is embedded in the strategic development of the department, with a particular focus on linking basic research, innovative diagnostic approaches, and clinical care, especially for patients with severe acute and chronic pulmonary diseases. The professorship is expected to strengthen the faculty’s scientific focus areas, particularly in inflammation and infection, and to contribute to research activities within the German Center for Lung Research (DZL) and the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF).
Responsibilities:
- Representation of the field in research, teaching, and clinical care, with a focus on chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD), intensive care and sleep medicine, and translational concepts in pneumology.
- Establishment and further development of an independent, externally funded research focus, ideally in the areas of chronic airway diseases, biomarker development, and rehabilitation research.
- Interdisciplinary collaboration with existing research groups and institutes of the university and university hospital, including in the fields of alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency and molecular diagnostics.
- Participation in undergraduate medical and dental education, postgraduate teaching, and supervision of doctoral candidates.
- Involvement in emergency and intensive care medicine, as well as participation in senior clinical responsibilities.
Requirements
- Medical degree and board certification in Internal Medicine and Pneumology.
- Habilitation or equivalent academic achievements with a focus on rehabilitation or translational research in pulmonary diseases.
- Several years of clinical experience, including experience in intensive care and/or sleep medicine.
- Scientific expertise in biomarker research, early rehabilitation, and/or alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency.
- Proven teaching competence and experience, continuous teaching activity, and successful supervision of doctoral theses.
- National and international conference presence and a strong publication record are expected.

The universities of Giessen and Marburg, together with the Technical University of Central Hesse, have established the Central Hesse Research Campus. Within this framework, the two medical faculties practice a structured collaboration based on coordinated priorities. Accordingly, candidates are expected to be willing to cooperate across universities and departments in campus priorities and profile areas, as well as to participate in collaborative projects. In particular, cross-site, patient-oriented clinical research and participation in joint clinical trials are required.
The health care tasks associated with the professorship will be regulated by a contract to be concluded with UKGM GmbH.
The recruitment requirements of §§ 67 and 68 HessHG apply, which are generally demonstrated by an outstanding doctorate and excellent additional scientific achievements (e.g. habilitation or internationally visible subject-specific publications).
