Job Description
PURPOSE AND SCOPE:
The Continuing Education Instructor, Law Enforcement Academy provides direction, teaching, and support for Law Enforcement course objectives and contributes to the educational environment of the Lone Star College and the community. Responsibilities include teaching and advising students. Primary functions are to plan, maintain, access, and teach courses within the curriculum in a manner that facilitates student success and student learning.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Teaches Law Enforcement courses at a variety of times and locations in response to institutional needs, making continuous efforts to improve the quality of instruction by reviewing and utilizing innovative methodologies, techniques, and delivery methods
- Develops and uses a syllabus for each course or laboratory within college and departmental guidelines
- Evaluates students to measure their progress toward achievement of stated course objectives, and informs them in a timely manner of their progress in the course. Identifies and assesses student who are in need of additional instruction successfully complete the course objectives
- Responsible for recruiting and advising students in their area
- Responsible for managing their classrooms and labs, including assuring lab facilities meet state requirement
- Responsible for assisting with student job placement
- Works directly with certification agencies to ensure alignment and high level of program and student success
- Responsible for other reasonable related duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

- Ability to work alternate locations as required for certain training
- Strong problem-solving abilities
- Ability to communicate, understand, and remediate less coordinated/ skilled cadets
- Strong demonstrated instructional skills
- Ability to manage complex projects demonstrating a high degree of judgment, integrity, tact and discretion
- Skilled in the Windows environment with basic proficiency with common office software.
- Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of people
- Ability to maintain confidentiality when required
- Ability to use effective strategies to engage students in their learning
PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion, such as frequent climbing of tall ladders, lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds, crouching or crawling in restricted areas.
WORK SCHEDULE & CONDITIONS:
- Law Enforcement Equipment used includes, Law Enforcement related firearms, including pump-action shotgun, and multiple caliber revolvers and semi-automatic handguns, and related safety equipment; Law Enforcement training vehicles, and related safety and set-up equipment; Handcuffs, Defensive Training Batons, and related safety equipment
- Office Equipment used includes, PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone and other general office equipment
- Interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position
- Work is performed in a multi-climate environment: Office with minimal exposure to safety hazards, as well as in indoor and outdoor settings with exposure to weather and safety hazards typical of those within the Law Enforcement training profession
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma and at least 10 years of Police Officer experience
- Valid Texas Driver License
- TCOLE Instructor Certification
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- TCOLE Firearms Instructor
- Certified Driving Instructor
