Dr. Walallawita K. Wimalsiri is a distinguished mechanical engineer with over four decades of academic and research experience. He earned his B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Moratuwa and a Ph.D. in Naval Architecture from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, United Kingdom. From 1984 to 2019, he contributed significantly to the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Moratuwa as an academic staff member. Presently, he serves as the Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Senior Lecturer (Higher Grade) at the Faculty of Engineering, Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT).
Dr. Wimalsiri's academic interests encompass thermodynamics systems, control engineering, and particularly ship stability and hull design for small vessels. His scholarly output includes several notable publications. In conference proceedings, he authored "Ro-Ro Cargo Ship Design and IMO Subdivision Regulations" presented at the RINA Safety and Vulnerability Way Ahead conference in London in 1991, "Probabilistic Approach to Assessment of Damage Survivability of Cargo Ships" in 2017, "Design and construction of high speed, hard chine planning hull" at the International Conference of Kotalawala Defence University in 2013, and "Knowledge based software for loading and stability of ships" at the International Research Conference of the University of Moratuwa in 2011. His journal articles include "Knowledge Based Software for Loading and Stability of Ships" published by the Engineering Research Unit in 2013, "Refrigeration system for Sri Lankan fishing boats" co-authored with D.A.W. Weerakoon, N.M.C. Weerasinghe, and M.J.P. Fernando in the Engineering Research Unit, 2013, "Manpower needs at craft vocational and technical levels in the oil and gas industry" in Emerging Off-shore Gas and Oil Industry in Sri Lanka, 2013, and "An Automated Rail Gate Management System for Sri Lanka" in The Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka journal, Issue 2019.
