Dr Victoria Mason is a Senior Lecturer in Politics and Global Studies in the School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences at Murdoch University. Prior to her appointment at Murdoch in July 2016, she served as a Lecturer in the School of Politics and International Relations at the Australian National University from January 2011 to July 2016, and as a Lecturer at Lancaster University's Richardson Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies from September 2008 to January 2011. Her research spans human rights, peace and conflict studies, critical security studies, the politics of international law, the Middle East, conflict transformation particularly in the Middle East, the Palestinian question, state violence, emancipatory critical security studies, economic social and cultural rights in the global human rights regime, refugee rights, social justice issues, Islamophobia, anti-Arab discrimination in the West, and diaspora communities. Mason employs interdisciplinary approaches drawing on ethnography, sociology, international migration studies, and social and cultural anthropology to examine identity negotiation, belonging, and home in diaspora contexts.
Mason's publications include the highly influential 'Children of the "Idea of Palestine" 1: Negotiating Identity, Belonging and Home in the Palestinian Diaspora' (2007), cited over 120 times, 'Assessing Nonviolence in the Palestinian Rights Struggle' co-authored with Richard Falk (2016, cited 32 times), 'The liminality of Palestinian refugees: betwixt and between global politics and international law' (2019), 'The "Question of Palestine": From liminality to emancipation' (2021), 'Strangers within the "luck country": Arab-Australians after September 11', 'Ghurbah: Constructions and negotiations of home, identity and loyalty in the Palestinian diaspora' (2007), '"No permission to shoot in Gaza is necessary": Israeli state terror against Palestinians in Gaza during Operation Cast Lead' (2012), '"The Invisible Man": H. G. Wells and Human Rights During the Interwar Period' (2019), and 'Introduction: Mobilities and Forced Migration' (2017). She has supervised doctoral and masters research on topics including obstacles to justice and the International Criminal Court, stateless Palestinians in Australia, Kenya's counterterrorism policy, and populist politics. Mason has earned commendations for teaching excellence, serves as a Murdoch Ally for gender and sexuality diversity, and contributes to public panels on human rights and the Palestinian situation, enhancing academic discourse on protracted conflicts, nonviolence, and emancipatory frameworks.
