Toshiaki Aizawa is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Economics and Business at Hokkaido University, specializing in health economics, empirical microeconomics, and applied econometrics. He investigates the dynamic mechanisms through which individual health status and socioeconomic status mutually influence each other, utilizing large-scale microdata from emerging countries. Aizawa obtained his PhD in Economics from the University of York in April 2020, MSc in Economics from the University of Edinburgh in 2014, and BA in Business and Commerce from Keio University in 2013. His doctoral thesis, "Essays on Health Inequality in Low- and Middle-income Countries," examines health disparities in developing regions.
Before joining Hokkaido University in April 2022, Aizawa held the position of Assistant Professor at the Institute for Advanced Study, Waseda University from July 2020 to March 2022, and served as Research Associate at the Asian Development Bank Institute from October 2014 to September 2016. His prominent publications include "Socio-economic gradients in hypertension and diabetes management amid the COVID-19 pandemic in India" (PLoS ONE, 2025), "Employee well-being in the digital age: Assessing the impacts of a smartphone application in the workplace" (Economics and Human Biology, 2024), "Long-Term Trends and Sociodemographic Inequalities of Emotional/Behavioral Problems and Poor Help-Seeking in Adolescents During the COVID-19 Pandemic" (Journal of Adolescent Health, 2024), "Does the conditional maternal benefit programme reduce infant mortality in India?" (Health Policy and Planning, 2022), "Inequality in health opportunities in Indonesia: long-term influence of early-life circumstances on health" (BMC Public Health, 2022), "Inequality of Opportunity in Infant Mortality in South Asia: A Decomposition Analysis of Survival Data" (Economics and Human Biology, 2021), and "Decomposition of Improvements in Infant Mortality in Asian Developing Countries Over Three Decades" (Demography, 2021). Aizawa has been recognized with the Best Excellent Teacher Award from Hokkaido University in October 2024. He currently serves on committees such as the Children and Families Agency Council and the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare Social Security Council, both from April 2025 to April 2027.
