About Thamer

Professor Thamer Kazim Yusuf Al-Hilfi serves as a professor in the Nursing department at Madenat Alelem University College. He earned his MBChB in General Medicine and Surgery from the University of Baghdad College of Medicine in 1986, a Diploma in Community Medicine through the Iraqi Board, a Master's degree in Medical Education from the Medical College of Baghdad University in 1991, and a Fellowship through Distinction (FFPH) from the Royal College in the UK in 2011. Additionally, he obtained a Master's in Health Professions Education from Suez Canal University and Maastricht University in 2006, marking him as the first Iraqi to achieve this qualification. His extensive training includes courses from Johns Hopkins University on leadership, epidemiology, research methodology, and HIV/AIDS, as well as workshops with WHO and UNDP on primary health care and communicable disease control.

Throughout his career, Al-Hilfi has held pivotal roles in public health, medical education, and international health projects. He previously served as Professor of Community Medicine and Director of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Al-Kindy College of Medicine, University of Baghdad from 2007 to 2011, and as Director of the Accreditation and Quality Assurance Unit since 2006. Notable positions include Senior National Professional Officer at the WHO Baghdad Office, Director of Quality Clinical Care for the USAID Primary Health Care Project in Iraq since 2012, Research Advisor from 2011 to 2012, Executive Director of the Iraqi Anti-TB Society in 2010, and Vice President of the Iraqi Country Coordinating Mechanism in 2010. He contributed to national committees for hospital and primary health care standards and provided consultancy for WHO, WFP, and UNESCO on TB, HIV/AIDS, and medical education. Al-Hilfi's research output includes highly cited publications such as 'Health services in Iraq' in The Lancet (2013, 278 citations), 'Epidemiology of acute respiratory tract infections among children under five years' in Middle East Journal of Family Medicine (2006, 38 citations), and works on tuberculosis knowledge, attitudes, primary health care utilization, and medical accreditation. He received the Middle East Doctor of the Year award in 2006 for modernizing Iraq's medical education system. His impact encompasses developing Iraq's tuberculosis program with WHO and Global Fund support and participating in international conferences on tobacco control, diabetes management, hypertension, and environmental health.
