Susannah Biondo-Gemmell is Professor of Studio Art at Cornell College, where she joined the faculty in 2010 as Associate Professor of Art and currently serves as Department Chair of Art and Art History. She teaches courses in 3D studio basics, ceramics, sculpture, casting, and the studio art senior seminar. Her artistic practice focuses on ceramic sculpture, encompassing time-based installations, performance, and object-based works that explore elemental themes and transformations. Prior to her tenure at Cornell College, Biondo-Gemmell held adjunct positions at institutions including Palomar College, Cuyamaca College, and Southwestern Community College, instructing in ceramics from beginning to advanced levels, drawing, art appreciation, and 3D design. She earned her M.F.A. in Ceramic Art from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in 2006 and her B.F.A. in Ceramic Art, with a psychology minor, from Washington University School of Art in 2002, graduating summa cum laude.
Biondo-Gemmell's exhibition record includes solo shows such as Scodella da Impagliata at Cornell College's Luce Gallery in 2017 and her M.F.A. thesis Toys for Prometheus at Alfred University in 2006. Selected group exhibitions feature Melting Point: Movements in Contemporary Clay at the Craft and Folk Art Museum in Los Angeles in 2018, Earth and Alchemy: Contemporary Ceramic Sculpture at Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2012, Elemental at Northern Clay Center in 2013, and Debut at Spencer Museum of Art, University of Kansas, in 2021. Her public commissions include Earth Plat for New York Mills Regional Culture Center in 2004 and Garden Alive in St. Louis in 2002. Awards and honors encompass the Ceramic Award at the 64 Arts National Juried Exhibition in 2011, juried by Adrian Arleo, and the Crescent Hills Research Grant for Public Art Sculpture. Her collaborative project Momento with Jennifer Rogers was reviewed in Ceramics: Art and Perception in 2011, and her work appeared in Ceramics Monthly's Exposure section. Biondo-Gemmell has contributed to committees such as the Implementation Task Force at Cornell College and facilitated workshops and residencies in ceramics.
