About Shuichi

Shuichi Shindo is a Professor in the Division of Foreign Studies at the Graduate School of Humanities, Osaka University, a position he has held since April 2022. Prior to this, he served as Professor in the Graduate School of Language and Culture Studies, specializing in Language and Society, from April 2014 to March 2022, and as Associate Professor in the same school from October 2007 to March 2014. Earlier appointments include Lecturer at the Faculty of Foreign Studies, Osaka University of Foreign Studies, from April 1997 to December 2001, and JSPS Research Fellow from April 1994 to March 1996. Shindo obtained his Master's degree in Cultural History from the Graduate School of Letters, Doshisha University, in March 1995, after earning a Bachelor's degree from the Faculty of Letters at the same university in March 1989. He pursued advanced studies at the Faculty of History, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, from April 1990 to October 1991, and at the Faculty of History and Philosophy, Bielefeld University, from October 1993 to March 1995.

Shindo's research focuses on the modern history of Germany and Austria, particularly examining social dynamics through schools, alongside interests in sociology of education, immigrant integration policies, ethnic concepts, history education, multicultural societies, and local studies. Notable publications include the article "Germany's Local Government: Immigrant Integration Policy in Action" in Ex Oriente (July 2011), "Overview of the state of research and trends in Japanese historiography of modern German history" in Korean Journal of German Studies (June 2010), and "Can we (still) learn from German history?" in Korean Journal of German Studies (September 2025). His books encompass co-authorship in "Immigrant Cities' Struggles and Challenges: New York and Frankfurt" (Koyoshobo, June 2015), joint editing of "Introduction to German History and Culture" (Minerva Publishing, November 2020), and contributions to "German History Research Introduction" (Yamakawa Shuppansha, May 2014). Since April 2020, he has been Vice President of Osaka University responsible for university-wide education and Director of the Center for Education in Liberal Arts and Sciences. Shindo serves as a councilor for the Osaka University Language and Society Association since 2005 and has given invited lectures such as "Multicultural Society in Germany Today: Challenges and Prospects" (March 2026) and "How to sustain the spiral of learning throughout a 100-year life" (September 2024).
