Sharrica Miller, Ph.D., RN, is an Associate Professor of Nursing at California State University, Fullerton’s School of Nursing in the College of Health and Human Development. She obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Howard University, Master of Science in Nursing from California State University, Long Beach, and Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing from the University of California, Los Angeles, where she studied from August 2011 to June 2017. Prior to her current appointment at CSUF, Miller held a position as an assistant professor at the American University of Health Sciences. Her extensive clinical background includes serving as a pediatric nurse at UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital, CHOC Children’s Hospital, Miller Children’s Hospital in Long Beach, and through Premier Nursing Registry.
Miller’s scholarly work focuses on the health and well-being of transitional-age foster youth, aged 18 to 26, investigating their patterns of health service utilization, heavy reliance on emergency care, and significant challenges in accessing healthcare often stemming from a lack of essential documentation like health cards, birth certificates, and medical records. She has identified higher rates of emergency service use, delayed treatments, and elevated mental health issues among these youth compared to non-foster care peers. Additionally, she contributes to nursing education research, exploring perspectives of inclusion among Black and Hispanic nursing students. Notable publications include “ ‘Everybody’s Scrutinizing You’: Perspectives of Inclusion among Black and Hispanic Nursing Students, ” co-authored and published in Teaching and Learning in Nursing in November 2022, and “Evidence-Based Guidelines for Creating Affinity Groups in Nursing Programs” in 2023, with her work garnering 22 citations. In December 2023, she was awarded for Faculty Excellence in Service by CSUF. Miller serves on the Advisory Committee for the School of Nursing’s Simulation Center, representing pediatrics, and held the role of Student Diversity, Engagement, and Support Coordinator for the ENGAGE Grant project. Her journey from foster care to Ph.D. was featured in the documentary “Still Waters Never Crash,” screened on campus in May 2023. Miller strives to prepare future nurses as leaders and educators.
