Dr. Sharen Nisbet is a Senior Lecturer (Teaching Scholar) in the Faculty of Business, Law and Arts at Southern Cross University, where she also serves as MBA (Online) Course Coordinator and MPM (Online) Course Coordinator. She earned a Bachelor of Business (Honours) from Southern Cross University and a PhD from the University of Melbourne. With extensive experience in business and tourism education, Sharen is a key member of the Faculty's Work Integrated Learning (WIL) team. Her teaching embeds employability skills, career development, and organisational behaviour theories across programs, culminating in supported capstone industry placements. She actively engages industry and community stakeholders to create meaningful student learning opportunities and contributes to a cross-disciplinary cooperative inquiry group examining academic identity, teaching approaches, and student engagement during curriculum reform.
Sharen's research focuses on student-employer collaboration, factors influencing success in work placements, educational design, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. Earlier contributions include gambling studies on player behaviour, venue accessibility, and responsible gaming technologies. Notable publications are 'A Qualitative Perspective on Physical, Social and Cognitive Accessibility to Gambling' (2010, with N. Hing), 'Students as Harsh Critics: A Comparison of Student and Industry Assessment of Placement Competencies' (2022), 'A Qualitative Exploration of the Causes and Consequences of Workplace Bullying in the Australian Hospitality Industry' (2021, with C. Van Der Wal et al.), and 'Supporting Academic Development During Curriculum Change: A Co-operative Inquiry of Identity and Engagement' (2025). In 2011, she received a national Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning, as part of the Work Integrated Learning Team from the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management, for pioneering student-centred, transformative, work-enriched experiential learning in tourism and hospitality management.
