About Robert

Robert E. Page Jr. is Provost Emeritus, University Professor, and Regents' Professor at Arizona State University, holding the Foundation Chair of Life Sciences in the School of Life Sciences. He earned a B.S. in Entomology with a minor in Chemistry from San Jose State University in 1976 and a Ph.D. in Entomology from the University of California, Davis in 1980. Page joined the UC Davis faculty in 1989, where he chaired the Department of Entomology from 1999 to 2004 and maintained a selective breeding program for honey bees that identified genetic bases for pollen hoarding and other behaviors. In 2004, he moved to Arizona State University as Founding Director of the School of Life Sciences, unifying departments of biology, microbiology, and plant biology. He later served as Dean of the School of Life Sciences, Vice Provost and Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and University Provost. His administrative leadership advanced interdisciplinary research and education at ASU.

Page's research specializes in the genetics and evolution of social behavior in honey bees, a key area within Agricultural and Veterinary Science due to their critical role in pollination and agriculture. He constructed the first genomic map of the honey bee, isolated the complementary sex determination gene featured on the cover of Cell, and demonstrated maternal genetic effects on worker behavior in a Nature cover story. He pioneered molecular studies of polyandry, sperm usage, and genotypic variation in task performance. Page has published over 250 papers with more than 25,000 citations and authored five books, including "The Spirit of the Hive: The Mechanisms of Social Evolution" (2013). His honors include the UC Davis Distinguished Emeritus Award (2019), Alexander von Humboldt Senior Scientist Award, Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Entomological Society of America Fellow (2007), Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, election to the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, and the James W. Creasman Award of Excellence from ASU Alumni Association. He founded ASU's Honey Bee Research Facility and co-founded the Social Insect Research Group, profoundly impacting behavioral genetics and evolutionary biology.
