The 2018 survey of more than 3,000 dogs remains the most substantial attempt to quantify how common it is for dogs to eat feces. Owners reported that roughly one in six dogs engaged in the behavior frequently enough to qualify as serious practitioners. Another quarter had been observed at least once. Those figures come from two separate web-based instruments, one broad and one directed at owners who had already noticed the habit repeatedly. The design trades some precision for scale, a common bargain when the alternative is observing thousands of dogs in controlled settings over months.
Most of the dogs in the frequent group preferred feces no more than two days old. That detail lines up with the proposed ancestral explanation: wolves in a den would remove fresh droppings before parasites inside them became infective. The same surveys found the behavior more common in households with multiple dogs and notably elevated in Shetland Sheepdogs relative to other breeds represented.
Surveys of this kind cannot establish causation. They record associations and owner recollections. They also cannot rule out that some dogs simply find the texture or smell reinforcing in ways that have nothing to do with hygiene or nutrition. Still, the consistency across thousands of reports gives the instinctual account more weight than anecdotes alone would allow.
Medical explanations receive frequent mention in veterinary sources. Conditions that impair nutrient absorption, increase appetite, or alter stool appeal can contribute. These include exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, certain endocrine disorders, and intestinal parasites. A thorough examination remains the prudent first step before attributing the behavior entirely to habit or preference.

Beyond the 2018 data, smaller studies and clinical observations point to additional influences. Multi-dog homes show higher rates, possibly because more feces are available or because social learning plays a role. Some owners describe the behavior emerging or worsening during periods of stress or restricted activity, though controlled evidence for those triggers is thinner. One 2022 trial that compared digestibility metrics between coprophagic and non-coprophagic dogs found little difference in most parameters, suggesting the act itself does not reliably improve nutrient extraction in otherwise healthy animals.
Attempts to stop the behavior through training or additives have produced modest results in the available reports. The same large survey that documented prevalence also asked about interventions; success rates hovered between one and four percent across the methods owners had tried. That outcome is unsurprising given how quickly the opportunity arises and how variable the underlying motivations appear to be.
Nutritional theories surface regularly. Some older suggestions linked the habit to deficiencies in B vitamins or poor diet digestibility, yet later reviews have not found consistent support for those claims in controlled work. Changing food or adding enzymes may help individual dogs, particularly if an underlying malabsorption issue exists, but broad recommendations lack strong backing from the larger datasets.
The behavior carries straightforward risks. Ingestion of feces can transmit parasites or pathogens, especially when the source is from unfamiliar dogs or wildlife. For that reason alone, management makes sense even when the habit itself appears benign to the dog.

Owners facing the issue typically begin by confirming the dog’s health status with a veterinarian. Once medical contributors are addressed or ruled out, environmental adjustments receive attention: prompt removal of feces, increased supervision during outdoor time, and enrichment that occupies the mouth and mind. Taste-aversion products exist, yet their reported effectiveness remains low in owner surveys. Muzzles or head collars can prevent access during walks when other measures fall short, though they address the symptom rather than any root preference.
What remains unclear is whether a subset of dogs would continue the behavior even under ideal conditions because the reward is intrinsic. Longitudinal studies that track individual dogs from puppyhood through adulthood, with consistent observation rather than owner recall, would clarify how stable the trait is and whether early intervention changes trajectories. The existing evidence suggests the habit is common enough to be considered within the normal range for the species, yet persistent enough in a minority of dogs to frustrate many households.
