Professor Nyi Nyi Naing @ Syed Hatim Noor serves as Professor (special grade B – VK6) in Community Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA), with expertise in medical statistics, epidemiology, and research methodology within the Medicine faculty. He earned his MBBS from the Institute of Medicine (1), Yangon, Myanmar in 1986, followed by MPH, Postgraduate Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (DTM&H), and MSc in Clinical Tropical Medicine from Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand in 1991-1992, and Master of Medical Statistics (MMedStats) from the University of Newcastle, Australia in 2000. His distinguished career includes roles as Medical Officer in the Public Health Division, Department of Health, Myanmar (1987-1990), Senior Medical Officer in Tropical Medicine at Soontorn Private Hospital, Thailand (1992-1994), and progressive positions at Universiti Sains Malaysia's School of Medical Sciences, Department of Community Medicine, Unit of Biostatistics and Research Methodology—from Lecturer (1994-2002), Associate Professor (2002-2007), to Professor (2007-2017). Since August 2017, he has held his current professorship at UniSZA's Department of Community Epidemiology, Medical Statistics, and Research Methodology, alongside earlier roles as Professor and research fellow, postgraduate and research coordinator at the Institute for Community (Health) Development (i-CODE) (2017-2018).
Professor Naing's research specializations encompass public health, biostatistics, medical epidemiology, research methodology, epidemiological studies on infectious and tropical diseases, TB-HIV co-infections, smoking and vaping, non-communicable diseases including cancers, and environmental studies such as PM2.5 effects. He has authored 186 Scopus-indexed articles and 140 Web of Science publications, including "Determinants of short inter pregnancy interval: a systematic review" (2020), "Sensitivity and specificity of QuantiFERON-TB Gold Assay in newly diagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis patients" (2020), "Postoperative morbidity and 3 year mortality in diabetic patients undergoing CABG" (2022), and "Factors associated with treatment outcomes (cured, completed treatment) of smear-positive pulmonary tuberculosis patients" (2025). His accolades include multiple Excellent Service Awards from Universiti Sains Malaysia (1996, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2014) and UniSZA (2017-2024), Best Lecturer Awards from USM schools (2000-2016), World’s Top 2% Scientist awards (single-year and career-long, Elsevier/Stanford, 2022-2025), innovation medals for smartphone apps (gold, silver, bronze 2019-2021), and fellowships as FRSS (Royal Statistical Society, UK, 2001) and FRSTM&H (Royal Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene, UK, 1996). He chairs UniSZA Human Research Ethics Committee (since 2018, 800 approvals reviewed), heads the Unit of Research Integrity and Ethics (2025-2026), serves on senate, research committees, and as reviewer for over 70 indexed journals, significantly influencing medical research ethics and biostatistics in Medicine.
