Dr. Nyein Aung serves as Senior Lecturer in Industrial Design in the Department of Design at Monash University’s Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture. He earned his PhD in Industrial Design from Monash University in 2018, with a thesis titled "Repose: An Aircraft Cabin Design Research to Improve the In-Flight Sleep of Long Haul Economy Passengers." He also holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Technology Sydney and an Associate degree from the Art Institute of Seattle in the United States. Born in Myanmar, Aung has studied and practiced design in the United States, Myanmar, and Australia. He currently acts as Senior Design Researcher and Program Director of Imaging Technology Design Research at Monash University’s Design Health Collab, overseeing high-impact healthcare services and products. Aung is Chief Examiner and Lecturer in the Bachelor of Design Industrial Design program and supervises graduate research.
Aung’s academic interests and research specializations include healthcare and medical technology design, mobility design, industrial design, camping and outdoor gear design, humanitarian design, behaviour nudging through design, and public art. Key projects encompass the Micro-X Head CT for point-of-care stroke diagnosis, Mobile Stroke Imager for ambulance integration, Self-Service Airport Security Checkpoint, and palliative care guest bed and communications modules funded by Creative Victoria. His achievements include Good Design Awards Gold Winner in 2024 for Micro-X Head CT and in 2021 for Repose, Designers Australia Award shortlisting in 2021 for Designs for the End of Life, Creative Victoria’s Creators Fund in 2020, Melbourne International Arts Festival Art Trams in 2019 Launch Tram, TEAGUE PhD Design Research Scholarship in 2015, Casey Hyun Industrial Design Graduate Award in 2009, and Carl Nielsen Professional Development Award in 2007. Notable publications feature "Security Self-Screening: A Passenger-Focused Approach" (2024), "Building Impact: Embedding Design PhD Researchers in Industry Contexts" (2023), and "Clinician Perspectives on Cannulation for Extracorporeal Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation: A Mixed Methods Analysis" (2023). The Repose aircraft cabin design is held in the permanent collection of the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney.
