About Najeebullah

Professor Najeebullah Shafaq is the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and a professor at Al-Beroni University in Kapisa Province, Afghanistan. He holds MD, MSc, and PhD degrees in medicine, with his PhD awarded by Osaka City University in Japan on March 24, 2011. Al-Beroni University, established in 1998 and named after the scholar Abu Rayhan al-Biruni, is a public institution with nine faculties, including medicine, engineering, law, economics, and others, serving approximately 4,682 undergraduate students and employing 147 academic staff. Under Dr. Shafaq's deanship, the Medical Faculty comprises departments of General Medicine (headed by Assistant Professor Dr. Abdul Moid Kohistani), General Surgery, and Para-clinic, playing a vital role in medical education amid regional challenges.

Dr. Shafaq's research focuses on orthopedic surgery, spinal pathology, and congenital musculoskeletal disorders. He is affiliated with the Department of Surgery in the Faculty of Medicine. Key publications include 'Investigating the birth prevalence of congenital club foot in both Paktya and Kapisa provinces of Afghanistan,' published in the International Journal of Research in Orthopaedics (2021, Vol. 7, No. 2, pp. 264-266). This cross-sectional study of live births in Paktya Regional Hospital and Alberoni Teaching Hospital from September 2019 to 2020 reported a prevalence of 0.35% or 3.5 per 1,000 live births, predominantly in males and unilateral cases, underscoring the need for early intervention. In 2012, he co-authored 'Asymmetric Degeneration of Paravertebral Muscles in Patients With Degenerative Lumbar Scoliosis' in Spine (Vol. 37, No. 14, pp. 1198-202), which used MRI and histology to show greater degeneration on the concave side. He also contributed to studies on fatty infiltration in lumbar paraspinal muscles correlated with spinopelvic alignment. More recently, in 2024, Dr. Shafaq provided organizational instruction for 'Enhancing medical training in conflict zones and remote areas: introducing the Canadian Virtual Medical University Initiative' in EClinicalMedicine.
