Michael A. Erskine serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Information Systems and Analytics within the Jennings A. Jones College of Business at Middle Tennessee State University, a position he assumed in August 2023 following six years as Assistant Professor in the same department since 2017. His academic journey is marked by advanced degrees from the University of Colorado Denver, including a Ph.D. in Computer Science and Information Systems completed in 2013 with a dissertation titled "Decision Performance Using Spatial Decision Support Systems: A Geospatial Reasoning Ability Perspective," an M.S. in Information Systems in 2007, and earlier a B.S. in Computer Information Systems from Metropolitan State University of Denver in 2004.
Before joining MTSU, Dr. Erskine held the role of Director of the Educational Technology Center at Metropolitan State University of Denver from January 2014 to July 2017, where he initially served as Interim Director. His professional experience also encompasses serving as Chief Technology Officer at Developing Minds Software, Inc. from 2007 to 2015, Project and Classroom Technology Manager, and Senior Web Developer and Project Manager at MSU Denver. Dr. Erskine’s research specializations include educational technology, learner competencies, disaster management, technology governance, and location analytics. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and books. Notable recent publications are "Location Analytics in Information Systems: Opportunities for Research and Teaching" in Communications of the Association for Information Systems (2024), "The effects of bribery on the digitization of small and medium enterprises in Latin America" in Information Systems Journal (2024), "Overcoming IT Project Challenges: An Integrated Model of Characteristics, Leadership, and Complexity" in Information Systems Management (2024), and "Thriving with Remote Work During a Crisis: Effects of a Mandatory Technology-mediated Work Environment on Job Outcomes" in AIS Transactions on Human-Computer Interaction (2024). Additional contributions include book chapters such as "Toward the Improvement of Emergency Response Utilizing a Multi-Tiered Systems Integration Approach" (IGI Global, 2018) and articles in journals like Journal of Computer Information Systems and International Journal of Electronic Government Research.
Recognized for his contributions to teaching excellence, Dr. Erskine was selected as a Faculty Fellow in MTSU’s Center for Teaching & Mentoring for the 2020-2021 cohort. His teaching portfolio includes courses in web development, project management, strategic cybersecurity management, and location analytics. As a member of the Association for Information Systems, Project Management Institute, and Decision Sciences Institute, he actively presents research at conferences such as AMCIS and ConfIRM.
