Professor Melita Mehjabeen is a Professor in the Institute of Business Administration (IBA), University of Dhaka, specializing in Accounting and Finance within the Business Administration faculty. She obtained her PhD in Accounting, Accountability, and Governance from Alliance Manchester Business School, University of Manchester, UK, in 2017 as a Commonwealth Scholar. Her academic background also includes a Master's in Development Studies (2013) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Development Studies (2011) from the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka, as well as an MBA (2008) and BBA (2004) from IBA, University of Dhaka. Joining IBA in 2009, she progressed to Professor and currently coordinates the IBA MACC program, Doctoral Programme, and IBA Career Center. With over 20 years of experience in academia, research, financial services, consulting, and advisory roles, she previously served as a Global Management Trainee at British American Tobacco Bangladesh and held positions in product sales and transaction services at Citibank N.A.
Dr. Mehjabeen's research specializations include corporate governance, ESG, sustainability, circular economy, CSR reporting and accountability in emerging economies, SME finance, and formalization of informal enterprises. Key publications feature "Motivating Factors Affecting Formalisation of Small Informal Enterprises: Evidence from an Emerging Economy" with Sadia Noor Khan (Business Strategy and Development, Wiley, 2024), "Emergence of Corporate Political Activities in the Guise of Social Responsibility: Dispatches from a Developing Economy" with J. Siddiqui and P. Stapleton, and works on sustainability reporting practices in Bangladesh. She has garnered major grants and honors, including the International Research Grant for Climate Change and Plastic Recycling (Denmark, 2024), ESG Disclosure Practices research grant (Bangladesh, 2023), National Research Grant for Challenges in Formalising Informal Enterprises (2022), International Centennial Research (2020), Erasmus Faculty Exchange Program (Finland, 2017), and the Commonwealth Scholarship (UK, 2017). Mehjabeen has presented at international conferences such as CSEAR (UK), APIRA (New Zealand), and AAEE (UK), supervises PhD research on transitions to circular economy, and consults for organizations like the ILO on green jobs. Her influence extends through independent directorships at Grameenphone Ltd., Unilever Consumer Care Limited, BAT Bangladesh, and as Chairman of National Bank PLC.
