About Maximilian

Maximilian Auffhammer serves as the Avice M. Saint Distinguished Professor of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Regional Associate Dean in the College of Letters and Science at the University of California, Berkeley, contributing to the Business & Economics faculty through his expertise in environmental economics. He earned his B.S. in Environmental Science from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1996, M.S. in Environmental and Resource Economics from the same university in 1998, and Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California, San Diego in 2003. Auffhammer joined the UC Berkeley faculty in 2003 as an Assistant Professor in Agricultural and Resource Economics and International and Area Studies, advancing to Associate Professor in 2009 and full Professor in 2014. He has held the George M. Pardee Jr. Family Chair in International Sustainable Development since 2013, served as Chair of the Berkeley Division of the Academic Senate, Associate Dean of the Division of Social Sciences since 2015, and Chair of the Global Studies Teaching Program since 2016. Additionally, he is a Faculty Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory since 2018, affiliate faculty in the Energy and Resources Group, Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research's Energy and Environmental Economics program since 2011, Humboldt Fellow, and CESifo Fellow.

His research focuses on environmental and resource economics, energy economics, applied econometrics, climate change impacts, air pollution, social cost of carbon, and species conservation. A lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Auffhammer's publications appear in leading journals such as The American Economic Review, Review of Economic Studies, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, and Journal of the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists. Notable publications include "Quantifying Economic Damages From Climate Change" in the Journal of Economic Perspectives, "Climate change is projected to have severe impacts on the frequency and intensity of peak electricity demand across the United States" with Baylis and Hausman in PNAS (2017), and "North-South polarization of European electricity consumption under future warming" with Wenz and Levermann in PNAS (2017). His achievements include the 2007 PNAS Cozzarelli Prize, 2009 UC Berkeley Campus Distinguished Teaching Award, 2017 and 2021 Cheit Teaching Awards from the Haas School of Business, 2007 UC Berkeley College of Natural Resources Outstanding Assistant Professor Award, and 2007 Sarlo Distinguished Graduate Student Mentoring Award. He served as Co-Editor of the Journal of the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (2013-2015) and Associate Editor of the American Journal of Agricultural Economics (2011-2015).
