Matthew Eriksen, Ph.D., is the Ray Butkus ’73 Professor in Management and Chair of the Management Department in the Providence College School of Business. He joined the faculty in 2008 after a diverse career that began in finance at Ford Motor Company. Eriksen earned his B.S. in Finance from The Pennsylvania State University, M.B.A. in Business Administration from the University of Pittsburgh, and Ph.D. in Business Administration (Management) from the University of Rhode Island, with his dissertation titled "The Electronic Fishbowl as a Community of Inquiry: Management Passion in the XXI Century." He also holds an ABD in Finance from the University of Rhode Island, graduate credits from Antioch University, and training from Harvard Kennedy School of Government. Prior roles include professor at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, a stint with the Transportation Security Administration developing its leadership institute post-9/11, and professor of leadership at the University of Tampa, where he received David Delo Research Professor Grants in 2006-2007.
Eriksen has made significant scholarly contributions, totaling 63 items including 29 articles, 24 papers, 5 conference contributions, and 2 books. His research focuses on leadership development, responsible leadership, and innovative management education. Key publications include "Reimagining the introductory management course: Preparing students to be effective and responsible team and organizational members" (2024, International Journal of Management Education), "Developing Students’ Coaching Ability Through Peer Coaching" (2020, Journal of Management Education), "On Facilitating the Development of Leaders’ Ability to Exercise Good Judgment" (2021, Judgment and Leadership), and "Educating caring leaders: a paradox of collective uniqueness" (2020, Paradox and Power in Caring Leadership). Awards include the 2020 Marion and Jasper Whiting Fellowship for his project on Leadership Development and Human Performance Innovation. Through his endowed professorship, Eriksen attends conferences, pursues professional development, and designs experiential courses that enhance students' self-awareness, emotional regulation, and leadership capabilities, profoundly impacting their personal and professional growth.
