Dr Matthew J. Lupoli is a Senior Lecturer and the Deputy Director of Research in the Department of Management at Monash Business School within the Faculty of Business and Economics, Monash University. With a background in social psychology, he takes an experimental approach to organizational behaviour research. Most broadly, he studies ethics, emotion, and prosocial behaviour—that is, the factors that drive us to do good (or what we perceive to be good) for others and how individuals respond to these behaviours. Within these domains, Lupoli investigates the antecedents and consequences of unethical behaviours that are intended to benefit others, both within and outside of organizations. He also studies the dark side of positive emotion, with an emphasis on the potential drawbacks of compassion. In another line of work, he explores methods to foster prosocial behaviour, with a particular focus on charitable giving, trust, and forgiveness. Additionally, Lupoli is interested in using big data from online behaviour to solve social problems. He holds a PhD in management from the University of California, San Diego.
Prior to joining Monash University, Lupoli was a Lecturer in management at Deakin University. He has published research in leading journals such as Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, and Strategic Management Journal. Key publications include 'Good intentions, bad behavior: a review and synthesis of the literature on unethical prosocial behavior (UPB) at work' (Journal of Organizational Behavior, 2023, with S. Mo, A. Newman, and E. E. Umphress), 'Prosocial lies: causes and consequences' (Current Opinion in Psychology, 2022, with E. E. Levine), 'Unethical pro-organizational behavior' (Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Business and Management, 2023, with A. Newman and S. Mo), 'Social information decreases giving in late-stage fundraising campaigns' (PLoS ONE, 2022, with C. Morvinski and O. Amir), and 'Quantum leaps or baby steps? Expertise distance, construal level, and the propensity to invest in novel technological ideas' (Strategic Management Journal, 2021, with M. P. Mount and M. Baer). His work has received media coverage in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Psychology Today, and ABC News. Lupoli is accepting PhD students.
