PhD Research Topic
Postgraduate research at Sheffield Business School aims to empower students to develop their research skills and contribute knowledge through their focused study area. We are inviting proposals for self-funded PhDs within the research areas of Responsible Consumption and Sustainable Lives and Responsible Leadership and Socially Just Organisations.
Within the theme of Responsible Consumption and Sustainable Lives Sheffield Business School has a strong culture of leading research, combining design and social science expertise to address environmental and social sustainability. We invite PhD proposals that seek to contribute to one of the following objectives:
- Investigate different routes to encourage responsible consumption behaviour
- Identify strategies for individuals and enterprises to live and operate sustainably
- Highlight awareness-raising efforts to promote responsible consumption
- Inform and educate about the benefits and methods of sustainable living
- Provide insights that inform policy decisions and contribute to a more sustainable future
Within the theme of Responsible Leadership and Socially Just Organisations, Sheffield Business School has a strong culture of research, exploring how to educate and support authentic and ethical leaders, and supporting organisations to be responsible and socially just. We use creative, critical analysis to offer new perspectives and create meaningful change, working with organisations from the public, private and third sectors within our research. We invite PhD proposals that seek to contribute to one of the following objectives:
- Understand the complex environments in which organisations, leaders and employees operate, including changes in economic and political climates, attracting and retaining diverse talent, work/life balance and flexible working
- Encourage restorative practices such as facilitating collaboration, speaking up in the workplace and finding collaborative solutions to conflicts
- Explore how organisations secure talent and manage fairly, addressing equality, diversity and inclusion in the workplace, and understand the motivations of new generations of employees
- Look at ways for organisations to work sustainably with stakeholders and communities
- Understand the unique ways in which organisations from different sectors – public, private and third sectors – work to deliver a broad spectrum of activities and services in complex environments
Sheffield Business School takes seriously the impact of our research programmes on industry, communities and the environment, and prioritises research which is underpinned by the commitments enshrined in the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth, and SDG11 – Reduced Inequalities. We are therefore particularly interested in how your proposed research project will support our work in these areas.
We welcome proposals which include qualitative, quantitative or mixed methods approaches. Successful candidates will receive training in research philosophy and research methods within their first year of study.
