Professor Mark Harris is the John Curtin Distinguished Professor of Econometrics at Curtin University, affiliated with the School of Accounting, Economics and Finance in the Faculty of Business and Law. He holds a BA (Hons) from the University of Sussex, a Graduate Diploma from Monash University, and a PhD from Monash University. Harris joined Curtin in 2011 as a Professor in the Department of Econometrics and Quantitative Modelling and now serves as Director of Graduate Research in the School of Economics and Finance. Prior to Curtin, he held teaching and research appointments at Monash University and the University of Melbourne.
Professor Harris's research focuses on applied econometrics, particularly in health economics, where he develops and applies mathematical and econometric models to analyze complex interrelationships, such as health behaviors involving licit and illicit substances. He has received eight Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Project grants since 2003, along with funding from the National Health and Medical Research Council and the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute, totaling approximately $3.5 million. With nearly 70 journal articles, books, and book chapters published and over 2,000 citations, he ranks in the top 10 percent of economists worldwide. Key publications include "Cannabis and tobacco: substitutes and complements" (2024, Journal of Population Economics), "Is time a gift for health and life satisfaction? Exploring the relationship between time allocation and adaptation to a breast cancer diagnosis" (2025), and "The Sources of Researcher Variation in Economics" (2025). His honors include Curtin Business School Researcher of the Year (2014), the John Curtin Distinguished Professor title, and service on the ARC College of Experts. He also contributes editorially as a Section Board Member for Applied Economics and Finance in the Journal of Risk and Financial Management.
