Prof. dr. Marieke Liem is Professor of Security and Interventions at the Institute of Security and Global Affairs, Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs, Leiden University, where she coordinates the European Homicide Monitor and chairs the European Homicide Research Group. She earned her PhD in Forensic Psychology from Utrecht University in 2009, graduating cum laude and receiving the Willem Nagel Award for the best criminological dissertation in the Netherlands for 2009-2011. Liem holds an MPhil in Criminological Research from the University of Cambridge (2006), an MSc in Clinical Psychology from Utrecht University (2005, cum laude), and a BA summa cum laude from University College Utrecht and the University of California, Los Angeles (2004). Her professional career includes serving as Associate Professor at the Institute of Security and Global Affairs (2016-2019), Marie Curie Fellow at Harvard University (2012-2015), Visiting Professor in Criminology at Northeastern University (2011-2012), and Assistant Professor in Criminology at Leiden University (2010-2011). Earlier roles encompass PhD candidate at Utrecht University (2007-2009) and psychologist in forensic mental health assessment in private practice (2005-2011).
Liem's research specializes in interpersonal violence, domestic homicide including intimate partner homicide, homicide by the mentally ill, homicide followed by suicide, effects of confinement on violent offenders, and international comparative research on lethal violence. She has authored or edited key publications such as Handbook of European Homicide Research: Patterns, Explanations, and Country Studies (2012, with William Pridemore), Domestic Homicide: Patterns and Dynamics (2018, with Frans Koenraadt), After Life Imprisonment: Re-entry in the Era of Mass Incarceration (2016), Violent Encounters (2022), and Mythen over moord: dertig jaar fataal geweld in Nederland (2024, with G. Leistra). Her articles appear in journals including Homicide Studies, European Journal of Criminology, and Aggression and Violent Behavior. Awards include New Scientist Scientific Talent (2015), Marie Curie Fellowship, and Leiden University's Leadership with Impact and Academic Leadership recognitions. Liem serves on editorial boards of Homicide Studies and International Criminal Justice Review, and provides consultancy to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, European Institute for Gender Equality, and Dutch National Police. She has secured grants from the European Commission, WODC, and EMCDDA for projects on firearms trafficking, drugs-homicide links, and radicalisation.
