Dr. Lawrence Herman serves as Clinical Professor and Program Director of the Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies at Drury University, where he oversees the program that emphasizes collaborative care, service to underserved populations, and expansion across specialties. He earned a Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc) from the University of Lynchburg in 2020, a Master of Public Administration (MPA) in healthcare administration and finance from Long Island University, and completed physician assistant training at Stony Brook University. Certified as a Physician Assistant (PA-C) by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants and holding Distinguished Fellow status with the American Academy of PAs (DFAAPA), Herman possesses over 25 years of clinical practice in emergency medicine at Level I trauma centers and rural emergency departments, family practice, urgent care, and additional specialties. He has held administrative roles such as Chief PA in a New York City trauma system and administrative medical director in a multi-specialty practice.
Herman's academic career includes positions as former Dean, tenured professor, and program director at multiple physician assistant programs, Associate Program Director and Adjunct Professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch, and Adjunct Faculty in the Doctor of Medical Science program at the University of Lynchburg. He has demonstrated significant leadership in the profession, serving as President and Chair of the Board of Directors for the American Academy of PAs and President of the New York State Society of PAs. His scholarly contributions encompass authorship of book chapters, participation in clinical trials, over 50 peer-reviewed and invited publications, presentations at more than 200 international and national conferences, and peer review for the Journal of the American Academy of PAs. Herman has received state and university awards for teaching, research, and leadership, and at Drury, he led the inaugural White Coat Ceremony for the Physician Assistant Class of 2025 in September 2024.
