About Lalith

Professor Lalith Gamage serves as the Vice Chancellor, Managing Director, and Chief Executive Officer of the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT), a role he has fulfilled since its founding in 1999. He earned a degree in Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering from the University of Moratuwa and a PhD from the University of British Columbia, Canada. Earlier in his career, he worked as a lecturer, senior lecturer, and Director of the Computing Services Centre at the University of Moratuwa, where he also served as a council member. He holds positions as an affiliate professor at the University of British Columbia and adjunct professor at Curtin University, Australia. Gamage has held prominent leadership roles, including Chairman of the Arthur C. Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies, Lanka Software Foundation, and the ICT Cluster; Executive Director of the Trade Information Network at the Sri Lanka Export Development Board; founding President of the Sri Lanka Association of Non-State Higher Education Institutes; and advisory board member of the Sri Lanka Association of Software and Services Companies. He led the establishment of Sri Lanka's first technology incubator, Concept Nursery, which has nurtured numerous successful technology enterprises.

His research specializations include Artificial Intelligence, Computer Vision, Robotics, Evolutionary Computing, Industrial Automation, Mechatronic System Design, economic impact analysis of information technology, digital transformation, sensing, and networked communication. Key publications include the book Mechatronics: Fundamentals and Applications (2015, co-authored with C.W. de Silva) and conference presentations such as Evolutionary Computing for Industrial Automation (2016, 34th National Information Technology Conference), Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for Business, Industry and Society (2018, 39th Annual Conference of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka), and Industry 4.0 (2020, 38th National Information Technology Conference). Gamage has delivered numerous presentations on IT policy, electronic commerce, higher education, and economic development. His awards encompass the British Government Scholarship (1986-1987), Commonwealth Science Council Fellowship (1987), University of British Columbia Research Assistantship (1989-1993) and Postdoctoral Fellowship (1993-1994), Japanese Space Agency Research Award (1996-1999), The Outstanding Young Person of the Year for Academic Leadership and Accomplishment (2000), and the Most Outstanding ICT Contributor Award (2020, National ICT Awards). His contributions have significantly advanced IT education and the technology sector in Sri Lanka.
