Dr. Kristie Chavez is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Clinical Sciences at the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine, with a specialization in small animal emergency medicine and critical care. She is affiliated with the Animal Health Center and contributes significantly to clinical education and training for veterinary students in handling emergency and critical care cases. Dr. Chavez obtained her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2007. After graduation, she accumulated 12 years of practical experience at Horn Lake Animal Hospital in Horn Lake, Mississippi, practicing general veterinary medicine and emergency care, which provided her with substantial expertise in managing acute conditions in small animals.
Dr. Chavez returned to Mississippi State University in March 2019 as an Assistant Clinical Professor in emergency medicine and has advanced to Associate Clinical Professor. In her role as Service Chief of the Emergency/ICU unit, she leads critical care services within the Animal Health Center. She is dedicated to student development, advising on presentations such as case reports and leading organizations like the Student Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society. Her exemplary service was honored with the Pegasus Faculty Award for Service at the College of Veterinary Medicine Awards Day. Additionally, Dr. Chavez co-authored the article 'Equipping veterinary students to be successful in rural mixed animal practice' in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association in 2025, addressing preparation for rural veterinary shortages.
