A true inspiration to all learners.
Kirsten Franklin is a Professional Practice Fellow in the Department of Physics within the Sciences Division at the University of Otago. She completed her BSc (Hons) and MSc at the University of Otago, focusing her master's research on atom-laser interactions and laser cooling. Franklin started her career there as a part-time Teaching Fellow in physics, running senior lab classes. She then took a role dedicated to first-year teaching and administration, particularly supporting students in health and life sciences through the PHSI 191 Biological Physics course.
Franklin collaborated with colleagues Paul Muir, Terry Scott, Paul Yates, and other Department of Physics staff on the textbook Introduction to Biological Physics for the Health and Life Sciences, published by Wiley in 2010 with a second edition in 2019. The book covers essential physics topics such as mechanics, solids and fluids, thermodynamics, electricity and DC circuits, optics, radiation and health, featuring examples and problems relevant to biomedical sciences. Her contributions extend to student supervision and departmental teaching from Room 111.
