She taught me Introduction to Statistics. For an introductory (literally a first year) course, it was as if she expected everyone to already have knowledge of the course material. She hardly taught during the sessions, and would refer us back to her recorded YouTube videos instead of just answering a simple question. It’s unwise to go to her sessions without having read the day’s topic material or having watched the recording. Her class sessions are more about practicing how to use formulas rather than the rationale. Do not miss a class or tutorial session, this is one of those courses where you have to be physically present and see the working out for yourself if possible. She’s a good lecturer and she provides the information, though not in the way most students are used to.
Dr. Kelly-Ann Dixon-Hamil serves as a Lecturer in the Department of Economics in Business & Economics at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, a position she assumed in August 2018 as a returning faculty member. Her academic credentials include a BSc in Statistics and Economics from the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, an MSc in Statistics from the University of Kent at Canterbury, an MSc in Mathematical Statistics from Purdue University, and a PhD in Statistics from Purdue University with a specialization in Spatial Statistics applied to Macrosystems Ecology. These qualifications underscore her expertise in quantitative analysis at the intersection of statistics, economics, and ecological modeling.
Dr. Dixon-Hamil's research output features peer-reviewed publications demonstrating her focus on spatial statistics and pedagogical innovations. Key works include 'Cross-Scale Contradictions in Ecological Relationships' (Landscape Ecology, Vol. 31, No. 1, pp. 7-18, 2016, co-authored with Iannone B.V., Huang W.K., Fei S., and Zhang H.) and 'Evidence of Biotic Resistance to Invasions in Forests of the Eastern USA' (Landscape Ecology, Vol. 31, No. 1, pp. 85-99, 2016, co-authored with Iannone B.V., Potter K., Huang W.K., Zhang H., Guo Q., Oswalt C., Woodall C., and Fei S.). In education, she published 'Team Teaching/Teaching to Know' (pp. 41-48, 2010, co-authored with McLean Cooke W., in JFHAA Active and Interactive Teaching and Learning Guide edited by M. Chisholm) and 'The WAC Experience: Integrating Writing Strategies into a Third-Year Statistics Course' (Caribbean Journal of Education, Vol. 30, No. 2, pp. 248-276, 2008). She co-authored 'Exploring Black Engineering Success: A Split Population Survival Analysis,' presented at the West Indies Economic Conference (2019), and a 2023 paper on 'Quantitative Methodological Approaches to Studying the Experiences of Underrepresented Racial/Ethnic Groups in Engineering' with Zephirin T. and Dickerson D. Dr. Dixon-Hamil teaches courses including Statistical Methods I and Intermediate Microeconomics I, contributing to the department's emphasis on applied quantitative methods.
