José Garcia Flores serves as the Library Facility Services Supervisor at the University of Otago. Having been with the institution for more than three years, he is responsible for ensuring the safety and wellbeing of library spaces across multiple facilities, including the Central Library, Robertson Library, Law Library, Science Library, and Medical Library. As the first point of contact for any health, safety, and wellbeing issues in the University’s library system, he conducts thorough hazard checks and leads the Library Facilities team in regular inspections to identify hazards and implement improvements.
Jose investigates incidents to prevent their repetition, organizes fire drills to enhance evacuation plans, and coordinates responses to real emergencies in collaboration with fire and emergency services. His leadership reflects a deep sense of responsibility and promotes a culture of shared accountability for health, safety, and wellbeing in the workplace. In recognition of these contributions, Jose received the individual Health, Safety and Wellbeing Award at the University of Otago Staff Awards in 2024, highlighting his dedication to maintaining accessible and secure library environments for all users.
