Jeffrey Samet, MD, MA, MPH, holds the position of John Noble, MD Professor in General Internal Medicine and Professor of Community Health Sciences within the Medicine faculty at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine and Boston University School of Public Health. He serves as Vice Chair for Public Health in the Department of Medicine, Boston University, and practices as a primary care physician at Boston Medical Center, with expertise in treating substance use disorders in general healthcare settings. Board certified in Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine and in Addiction Medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine, Samet joined the Boston University faculty in 1989 following his medical training. He completed his MD at Baylor College of Medicine in 1983, residency and chief residency in Internal Medicine at Boston City Hospital from 1983 to 1988, and a clinical and research fellowship in General Internal Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital through Harvard Medical School from 1986 to 1989. He also holds an MPH in Biostatistics and Epidemiology from Boston University School of Public Health, an MA in Chemistry from Brandeis University, and a BA in Chemistry from Brandeis University.
Samet's research specializations center on alcohol and drug use, HIV infection, and primary medical care. His projects address the linkage of alcohol and drug use treatment with primary medical care, substance use issues in primary care settings, the impact of alcohol and drug use on HIV-infected persons, HIV prevention and treatment among Russian substance users, and establishing medical care for HIV-infected persons. He is Principal Investigator of the NIAAA Alcohol-HIV Consortium known as URBAN ARCH, as well as two NIDA R25 grants supporting the Chief Residents Immersion Training (CRIT) program and the Research in Addiction Medicine Scholars (RAMS) program to advance physician addiction education and research careers. His international work spans Russia, India, Uganda, Ukraine, and Vietnam. Key publications include "Acute pain management for patients receiving maintenance methadone or buprenorphine therapy" (Annals of Internal Medicine, 2006), "Screening and brief intervention for drug use in primary care: the ASPIRE randomized clinical trial" (JAMA, 2014), and "Alcohol use and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection: current knowledge, implications, and future directions" (Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, 2016). Samet serves as Editor of the journal Addiction Science & Clinical Practice. In 2016, he was named the incumbent John Noble Professor of Medicine.
