Jeffrey Miecznikowski is Professor and Associate Chair of Strategic Initiatives in the Department of Biostatistics, University at Buffalo School of Public Health and Health Professions. He holds a PhD in Statistics (2006) and MS in Statistics (2002) from Carnegie Mellon University, and a BS in Physics/Mathematics summa cum laude (2000) from Canisius College. His academic career at the University at Buffalo began as Assistant Professor of Biostatistics (2005-2012), followed by promotion to Associate Professor (2012-2024) and Professor thereafter. Additional appointments include Assistant Professor of Oncology, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Institute (2008-present), and Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Orthopedics, University at Buffalo (2019-present). Miecznikowski serves as Co-Director for the MS Graduate Program in Biostatistics and Bioinformatics (2015-present), Interim Chair of the Department of Biostatistics (April 2023-February 2024), and previously as Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Diversity, School of Public Health and Health Professions (2012-2017).
His research encompasses biostatistics with emphases on multiple testing procedures, biomarker development, normalization and signal processing in high-dimensional omics data, pathway analysis, genetic mediation models, microbiome-based biomarker discovery, and markers for prognosis and diagnosis in concussion and mild traumatic brain injury. Collaborative projects include biomarker development in Sjögren’s syndrome, the oral microbiome’s role in diabetes and oral health, symbiosis between oral and anal microbiomes in HIV-positive patients, and study design and analysis for the University at Buffalo Concussion Management Clinic. Key publications feature 'Safety and prognostic utility of provocative exercise testing in acutely concussed adolescents: a randomized trial' (Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine, 2018), 'The predictive capacity of the Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test after sport-related concussion in adolescents' (Frontiers in Neurology, 2019), 'Identification of supervised and sparse functional genomic pathways' (Statistical Applications in Genetics and Molecular Biology, 2020), and 'MOSCATO: A Supervised Approach for Analyzing Multi-Omic Single-Cell Data' (BMC Genomics, 2022). Miecznikowski has received the Outstanding Teacher of the Year award (2019, School of Public Health and Health Professions), membership in Sigma Xi Honor Society (2023) and Delta Omega Honor Society (2022), and selection as a Fellow for the Mid-American Conference Academic Leadership Development Program (2023-2024). He contributes as a faculty expert on statistical analysis, consulted by media on topics including lottery odds.
