Professor Jean-Pierre Louboutin serves as Professor in Anatomy in the Section of Anatomy, Department of Basic Medical Sciences, Faculty of Medical Sciences at The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus. He joined the Department in 2012 as Senior Lecturer and was promoted to the rank of Professor effective September 28, 2016, in recognition of his academic accomplishments and contributions to the field. A French national, he completed his first residency in 1982, was appointed Assistant Professor of Neurology in 1987, and certified as a Neurologist in 1991. In 1986, he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Hospitals of the University of Nantes. Prior to UWI Mona, he held positions as postdoctoral fellow and Research Associate at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, where he maintains roles as Visiting Scholar Associate and Consultant in the Gene Therapy program.
Professor Louboutin's research centers on neurodegenerative diseases, emphasizing gene therapy and stem cell applications to central nervous system disorders, including neurovirology, HTLV-1, neuromuscular disorders, HIV-1 associated neurocognitive disorder, neuroscience, and neurology. He has published over 90 peer-reviewed articles—46 as first or last author—in journals such as Nature Methods, Journal of Clinical Investigation, Annals of Neurology, PNAS, Stem Cells, and American Journal of Pathology, alongside 17 book chapters and numerous conference presentations. Forthcoming books include Gene Therapy in Neurology (Nova Science Publishers) and HIV-1 Associated Neurocognitive Disorder (HAND) (Bentham Publishers). He has obtained funding exceeding US$130,000 from sources including the National Institutes of Health, French Muscular Dystrophy Association, French Spatial Agency CNES, Research Regional Committee of the Hospital of Nantes, and the Principal’s Initiative Grant. Professor Louboutin contributes to editorial boards of 31 international journals, reviews for over 65 others, teaches anatomy in MBBS, BSc Physical Therapy, and BSc Biomedical Sciences programs, coordinates courses, mentors students, and supports development of a Histochemistry laboratory in his department.
