Dr Jia (Jackie) Rong is a Senior Lecturer and Discipline Coordinator for Translational AI in the Department of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, Faculty of Information Technology, at Monash University. She is a Teaching and Research Academic affiliated with the Monash Data Futures Institute and the Alliance for Digital Health at Monash. Rong earned her PhD in 2012 from Deakin University, along with a Bachelor of Information Technology (Honours). Her research specializations encompass machine learning, deep learning, pattern recognition, natural language processing, image processing, biosignal processing, and their applications in digital health, such as medical image analysis for cancer diagnosis and cardiac disease detection.
In her career at Monash, Rong directs the Master of Data Science and Master of Applied Data Science (online) programs and has lectured in courses including Data Wrangling, Introduction to Data Science, Statistical Data Modelling, Applied Data Analysis, and Machine Learning. She has produced 40 journal articles, 16 conference papers, and 2 book chapters, with recent works like "A dual-image fusion instance segmentation model for pavement patch detection" (2025, International Journal of Pavement Engineering), "Enhancing Motivation and Learning in Primary School History Classrooms: The Impact of Virtual Reality" (2025), and "HB-net: Holistic bursting cell cluster integrated network for occluded multi-objects recognition" (2025). Rong serves as an editorial board member for Scientific Reports (since 2022) and reviews for prominent journals including Tourism Management (since 2015), Information Processing and Management (since 2019), and IEEE Transactions on Human-Machine Systems. She is also a program committee member for conferences such as AAAI, IJCAI, and PRICAI. Her research contributes to projects like the ARC Research Hub for Value-Added Processing of Underutilised Carbon Waste (2024-2029) and AI for Clean Energy and Sustainability (2023-2027), impacting UN SDGs in health, education, and sustainability. With more than 2,800 citations on Google Scholar, Rong's work significantly influences the fields of applied data science and artificial intelligence.
