Dr. Ian Kay serves as a lecturer at the University of Buckingham Medical School (UBMS), contributing to the MB ChB programme through teaching in several key courses. These include Medical Education, Cardiovascular System, Gastroenterology, Neurodiversity and Student Well-being in Medicine Education, and Clinical Pharmacology. His instructional roles support preclinical medical students in foundational and specialized topics within medicine.
Prior to joining UBMS, Dr. Kay held the position of Senior Lecturer and Associate Head of School in the Division of Health Sciences at Manchester Metropolitan University, where he taught physiology at undergraduate and postgraduate levels for over twenty years. At MMU, his work focused on physiology education, with research interests in learning and teaching strategies and the student experience. He co-authored textbooks such as 'Thrive in Human Physiology' (Oxford University Press, 2012, with Gethin Evans) and 'Introduction to Animal Physiology'. Dr. Kay has published peer-reviewed articles, including ''Doing the Homework': Medical Student Resources' in the Journal of Medical Education Research (2025, co-authored with Nicholas G. Bittar), which examined resource usage and effectiveness among Year 1 and Year 2 medical students at the University of Buckingham using survey data and chi-squared analysis. Other contributions encompass 'Streptococcus pneumoniae potently induces cell death' (2018), 'Instructional technology impacts physiology teaching' (2006), and 'Physiology Educational media' (2008). He serves on the editorial team of the Journal of Medical Education Research and has been active in the Physiological Society, representing MMU and chairing symposia. Dr. Kay previously worked at PathWest Laboratory Medicine. Currently, he is the Academic Lead for Year 2 of the MB ChB programme at the University of Chester.
