Professor Hodson Makurira is an Associate Professor in the Department of Construction and Civil Engineering at the University of Zimbabwe, where he holds the position of Dean of the Faculty of Engineering. He earned a Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Zimbabwe, a Post-graduate Diploma in Water and Environmental Resources Management and an MSc in Water and Environmental Resources Management from UNESCO-IHE (now IHE Delft Institute for Water Education) in the Netherlands, and a PhD in Water Management and Hydrology from Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands. Prior to joining the University of Zimbabwe in 2003, he worked as a Hydraulic Engineer and Water Resources Engineer for the Ministry of Water Resources and Development and the Zimbabwe National Water Authority. Throughout his career at the university, he has served as Chairman of the Department of Construction and Civil Engineering from 2012 to 2014, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment from 2015 to 2022, Acting Dean of Studies for the University of Zimbabwe - Pan African Minerals University of Science and Technology College since 2023, and currently as Pro-Vice Chancellor for Infrastructure Development and Digitalisation. He is a Fellow of the Zimbabwe Institution of Engineers and a registered Professional Engineer with the Engineering Council of Zimbabwe.
Professor Makurira specializes in water resources management and hydrology, with research interests encompassing integrated water resources management, water resource modelling and simulation, environmental impact assessment, water engineering, and water conservation. He lectures water engineering courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and has supervised over 50 BSc, MSc, and PhD projects and theses in the water engineering field, leading to numerous publications in local and international journals. Key publications include book chapters such as 'Building capacity for upscaling the WEF nexus and guiding transformational change in Africa' (2022, Elsevier) co-authored with Tendai P. Chibarabada et al., and 'Rainwater harvesting and conservation agriculture in the southern African region' (2014, Tilde University Press). His work has garnered over 1,200 citations. He serves as Zimbabwe's national representative and Chairman of the Africa Regional Committee of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences, past Chairperson of the WaterNet Board of Trustees, and Associate Editor for the Journal of Physics and Chemistry of the Earth and Hydrological Sciences Journal. He has contributed to community projects, capacity building initiatives, regional consultancies, and lecturing at various universities.
