Folker Hanusch is a Professor of Journalism in the Department of Communication within the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Vienna. Originally from Germany, he earned his Bachelor of Arts (Honours Class IIa) in Journalism and Doctor of Philosophy in Journalism from the University of Queensland, Australia, as well as a Graduate Certificate in Education (Higher Education) from the same institution. His career started in journalism practice as a reporter for the Sunshine Coast Daily newspaper and as Queensland Correspondent and section editor for Die Woche in Australien, a German-language newspaper in Sydney. In academia, he held positions including sessional tutor and lecturer at the University of Queensland, post-doctoral research fellow there from 2006 to 2008, lecturer and later senior lecturer at the University of the Sunshine Coast from 2008 to 2014, and Associate Professor in Journalism at Queensland University of Technology from 2014 to 2016, where he was also Vice-Chancellor's Research Fellow. Since August 2016, he has been Professor of Journalism at the University of Vienna, and he continues as Adjunct Professor at QUT. He currently serves as Vice-Dean for Career Development and International Affairs in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Vice-Director of Studies (SPL 22).
Hanusch specializes in comparative journalism studies, journalism culture, lifestyle journalism, indigenous journalism, journalism and memory, with recent research on emotions in political journalism, audience expectations in digital news, and adoption of audience analytics by journalists. He has published several seminal books: Representing Death in the News: Journalism, Media and Mortality (Palgrave Macmillan, 2010), Journalism Across Cultures: An Introduction (co-authored with Levi Obijiofor, Palgrave Macmillan, 2011), Lifestyle Journalism (Routledge, 2013), and Travel Journalism: Exploring Production, Impact and Culture (co-edited with Elfriede Fürsich, Palgrave Macmillan, 2014). Over 40 peer-reviewed articles of his appear in prestigious journals such as Media, Culture & Society, European Journal of Communication, Journalism Studies, Digital Journalism, and Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly. Hanusch is the editor-in-chief of Journalism Studies, sits on editorial boards of Digital Journalism, Communication Theory and Practice, and Australian Journalism Review, and is vice-chair of the Worlds of Journalism Study. He leads the Journalism Studies Center at his department and has been chief investigator in projects like the Australian Research Council-funded Journalism Beyond the Crisis: Emerging Forms, Practices, and Uses (2016-2018).
