Ferran Martinez i Coma is Professor in the School of Government and International Relations at Griffith University. An applied political scientist, he focuses his research on electoral behaviour, electoral integrity, and related public policy issues. His current Australian Research Council Future Fellowship project, "Resilient elections: How to Strengthen Our Democracies," funded at $1,031,246, investigates how elections can overcome environmental, societal, and technological threats to participation, contestation, and organisation. This involves large-N global analyses from 1945 onwards and case studies of Australia, India, Indonesia, the United States, and Canada to map threats, explain effects, and propose mitigation strategies.
Martinez i Coma joined Griffith University in late 2016 as Research Fellow with the Griffith Asia Institute and Centre for Governance and Public Policy, following a role as Research Associate at the University of Sydney's Electoral Integrity Project. He advanced through positions including Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor, and Director of Engagement to his current professorship. Key publications include co-editing Advancing Electoral Integrity (Oxford University Press, 2014) with Pippa Norris and Richard W. Frank; "How electoral integrity affects voter turnout in democracies" (2017); "The personality of populists: provocateurs, charismatic leaders, or drunken uncles?" (2019); and "The link between the number of parties and district magnitude" (2024). He received Griffith University's 2025 Vice Chancellor's Excellence in Research Award and serves on the Electoral Integrity Project's International Advisory Board. His consulting and public lectures contribute to policy on democratic resilience.
