Dr. Erin Dormedy is Professor and Chair of the Department of Food Science and Nutrition in the Jordan College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology at California State University, Fresno. She joined the Fresno State faculty in 1999 and serves as Director of the Food Science Program. Dr. Dormedy earned her B.S. degree from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, M.S. from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, and Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Her research specializations include intervention methods for the control of foodborne pathogens, food safety and biosecurity, Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) implementation and validation, development of HACCP intervention methods, food industry outreach, and technology transfer. As a researcher, her primary goal is to make the food supply safer through these efforts.
Dr. Dormedy has authored key publications in food safety, serving as corresponding author for 'Presence of Salmonella and Escherichia coli O157:H7 on the Surface of Citrus Fruits Packed for Fresh Consumption' in the Journal of Food Protection (2018), which investigated microbial presence on citrus packing equipment. She led the project 'Evaluation of Sanitizing Treatments for Sizer Carriers in Stone Fruit Packinghouses,' funded by the Center for Produce Safety (2015), assessing sanitation efficacy in produce processing. Her career includes securing grants such as those from the Agricultural Research Institute for projects enhancing student experiential learning in food science and partnerships with Texas Tech University's International Center for Food Industry Excellence on Salmonella research. Dr. Dormedy advises undergraduate and graduate students, coordinates program advising, contributes to biotechnology faculty research, and participates in graduate committees and faculty fellowship programs. She has demonstrated food safety testing methods in university labs and supported initiatives like honors cohort projects and innovation summits.
