Dr. Erica Beidler is an Associate Professor in the Department of Athletic Training within Duquesne University’s John G. Rangos Sr. School of Health Sciences, having joined the faculty in July 2016. She earned her Ph.D. in Kinesiology, with concentrations in athletic training, sport psychology, and personality psychology, from Michigan State University in 2016; her M.Ed. in Kinesiology, with a concentration in athletic training and sports medicine, from the University of Virginia in 2012; and her B.S. in Athletic Training from Mercyhurst University in 2011. Dr. Beidler is a licensed athletic trainer through the Pennsylvania State Board of Medicine (license #RT006417), a certified athletic trainer (BOC #20000006410), and holds a National Provider Identifier (#1588198824). She maintains memberships in the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, the Eastern Athletic Trainers’ Association, and the Pennsylvania Athletic Trainers’ Society. As founder and Co-Director of the Sport & Injury Psychology (SIP) Research Lab at Duquesne University, she provides research experience to undergraduate and graduate students pursuing careers in health-related fields, focusing on concussion and sport specialization.
The primary objective of Dr. Beidler’s research is to enhance the concussion injury experience for improved patient- and clinician-oriented outcomes. Her research interests encompass concussion, person-centered care, mental health and wellness, and healthcare policies and procedures. She investigates innovative applications of personal sensing technology from smartphones and wearable devices to objectively assess daily life patterns following concussion, aiming to inform targeted treatment strategies. Additionally, she curates resources for athletic trainers to create evidence-informed concussion policies suited to their communities. Her work is supported by funding from the NIH New Hampshire IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence program, the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, and the Pennsylvania Athletic Trainers’ Society. Dr. Beidler has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles in journals related to sports medicine, brain injury, and psychology. Key publications include “Anxiety-related concussion perceptions of parents of youth athletes” (Journal of Athletic Training, 2025), “More than skin deep: Patient-provider racial and ethnic concordance in collegiate athletics and concussion management” (Journal of Athletic Training, 2024), “Going beyond the state law: Investigating high school sport-related concussion protocols” (Journal of Athletic Training, 2022), “Factors associated with parent and youth athlete concussion knowledge” (Journal of Safety Research, 2022), “Collegiate athletes’ concussion awareness, understanding, and reporting behaviors in different countries with varying concussion publicity” (Journal of Athletic Training, 2021), and “Anxiety-related concussion perceptions of collegiate athletes” (Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport, 2021). She contributes editorially as Associate Editor of the International Journal of Athletic Therapy and Training, serves as Research Expert on the Pennsylvania Department of Health Brain Injury Advisory Board, participates on the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Research & Education Foundation Student Writing Award Committee, and acts as a professional mentor in the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Faculty Mentorship Program.
