Enrique Treviño is the Ernest H. Volwiler Professor of Mathematics and Chair of the Mathematics and Computer Science Department at Lake Forest College. He earned a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Texas at El Paso in 2006, an M.A. from Dartmouth College, and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Dartmouth College in 2011, where his dissertation, "Numerically Explicit Estimates for Character Sums," was advised by Carl Pomerance. Following his doctoral studies, Treviño served as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Swarthmore College from 2011 to 2013. He joined Lake Forest College as an Assistant Professor in 2013, advancing to Associate Professor in 2018, full Professor in 2024, and Ernest H. Volwiler Professor in 2025.
Treviño's areas of specialization are analytic number theory and computational number theory, complemented by interests in recreational mathematics. His research addresses topics such as the least quadratic non-residue, the least inert prime in real quadratic fields, concrete inequalities, partitioning powers into sets of equal sum, and sets whose subsets have integer means. Notable publications include "The primes that Euclid forgot" with Paul Pollack in the American Mathematical Monthly (2014), "Sums of proper powers" with Paul Pollack (2021), "On the sum of k-th powers in terms of earlier sums" with S. J. Miller in The College Mathematics Journal (2022), and the translation of "Cuban Mathematical Olympiads" by Robert Bosch (2017). Awards include the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program award in 2020 for research and lecturing at Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo, Swarthmore College Research Award (2011-2013), and GAANN Fellowship (2006-2007). He ranked in the top 200 of the 66th Putnam Competition in 2005. Treviño contributes to mathematical competitions as co-editor in chief of the USA Mathematical Olympiad since 2022, member of the Mexican Mathematical Olympiad Committee since 2015, and coach for Mexico at the International Mathematical Olympiad, including co-coaching in 2024. He actively mentors undergraduates, co-authoring multiple papers with students.
