Professor Clare Wilkinson is Emeritus Professor of General Practice in the North Wales Medical School at Bangor University. She qualified with an MBBCh from the Welsh National School of Medicine in 1980, followed by a Diploma of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 1984, Membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners in 1985, an MD Thesis from Cardiff University in 1996, Fellowship of the Royal College of General Practitioners in 2009, and Honorary Membership of the National Institute for Health Research in 2008. As a practising general practitioner, she has held the position of Professor in General Practice at Bangor University, previously within the School of Health Sciences, and has been a key leader in the North Wales Centre for Primary Care Research. Her career encompasses extensive contributions to primary care, including roles such as Co-Chief Investigator for projects like ThinkCancer!, WICKED, CARiAD, and CLASP.
Professor Wilkinson's research specializations focus on primary care cancer detection, diagnosis, follow-up, survivorship, and end-of-life care, including carer administration of medications and digital interventions. Notable publications include 'Digital intervention to support cancer survivors: the CLASP research programme' (Programme Grants for Applied Research, 2026), 'Carer administration of as-needed subcutaneous medication for breakthrough symptoms in people dying at home: the CARiAD feasibility RCT' (BMJ Open, 2025), 'Point-of-care C-reactive protein testing in general practice out-of-hours services: tool or trap?' (British Journal of General Practice, 2025), 'What can we learn from the accounts of lay carers administering end of life medications to a loved one at home?' (Palliative and Supportive Care, 2025), and 'Hidden systems in primary care cancer detection: an embedded qualitative intervention development study' (British Journal of General Practice, 2024). She has chaired the Primary Care and Complex Interventions Panel for the Health Technology Assessment programme, served on the Department of Health Policy Research Unit Commissioning Panel, the Evaluation Panel for Cross-border Health Care Intervention Trials in Ireland, and as Trial Steering Committee Chair for ABACUS and CANASSESS trials, and is a member of the Cancer Implementation Group Wales. Her impact is recognized by an MBE awarded in the 2025 King's New Year Honours and a finalist position in the St David 2024 Award.
