Charles Cullinan is Professor of Accounting and Chair of the Accounting Department at Bryant University. He earned a Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky, an M.S. from the State University of New York at Albany, and a B.S. from Suffolk University. Cullinan holds professional certifications as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA), and Certified Internal Auditor (CIA). He has served on the Bryant University faculty for over 28 years, teaching accounting courses domestically and internationally in Canada, Portugal, and China. As a Fulbright Scholar in 2000, he lectured and conducted research at the University of Algarve in Portugal. Cullinan has also participated in faculty development initiatives, including teaching summits and the Academic Integrity Committee at Bryant University. He maintains active professional memberships in the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Institute of Management Accountants, Institute of Internal Auditors, and American Accounting Association.
Cullinan's research specializes in corporate governance and audit markets. He has authored or co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, including 'A Thematic Analysis of Code of Ethics Disclosures in SEC 8-K Item 5.05' in Business Ethics, the Environment & Responsibility (2024), 'The potential effects of auditor rotation: consideration of both pre and post rotation periods in the Chinese setting' in Managerial Auditing Journal (2024), 'Costs Associated with Exit or Disposal Activities: A Topic Modeling Investigation of Disclosure and Market Reaction' in Intelligent Systems in Accounting, Finance and Management (2023), 'Corporate Tax Avoidance and Corporate Social Responsibility Disclosure Readability: Evidence from China' in Australian Accounting Review (2022), and 'Managing the Going Concern Risk in an Uncertain Environment' in The CPA Journal (2020). Additional works cover topics such as CSR and shareholder voting, audit fees, and auditor changes. His contributions have earned recognition through awards including the Outstanding Service Award from the AAA Public Interest Section (2019 and 2015), Managerial Auditing Journal Outstanding Reviewer (2018), multiple Best Paper Awards (2014 and 2013), Outstanding Faculty Contributions to Research (2014), and the Elijah Watt Sells Award (1985).
