Great Professor!
Professor Andrew Boyle is Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine and Head of Discipline in the School of Medicine and Public Health, College of Health, Medicine and Wellbeing, at the University of Newcastle. He earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery with Honours from Monash University and a PhD in Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences from the University of Melbourne, focusing on cardiac regeneration. Boyle completed cardiology advanced training at St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne, followed by a fellowship at Johns Hopkins University in the United States. He then joined the faculty at the University of California San Francisco as Associate Professor of Medicine from 2006 to 2013, where his laboratory investigated aging-related changes in left ventricular remodeling following myocardial infarction, supported by grants from the US National Institutes of Health.
Returning to Australia, Boyle established his research program at the Hunter Medical Research Institute and practices as an interventional cardiologist at John Hunter Hospital, specializing in coronary stenting, transcatheter aortic valve implantation, and acute coronary syndromes. His research encompasses basic science, translational, and clinical studies on left ventricular remodeling, molecular mechanisms of cardiac fibrosis, apoptosis, stem cell function, heart failure, and systems-of-care improvements in rural settings. He has secured over $13 million in competitive funding from sources including the National Health and Medical Research Council, National Heart Foundation of Australia, and Hunter Medical Research Institute, notably leading a 2022 randomized controlled trial on patient well-being post-acute decompensated heart failure ($964,531) and cardiac fibrosis projects funded by Australian Rotary Health. Boyle has authored over 150 peer-reviewed publications, including highly cited works such as "Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells stimulate cardiac stem cell proliferation and differentiation" (Circulation Research, 2010; 921 citations), "The aging heart and post-infarction left ventricular remodeling" (Journal of the American College of Cardiology, 2011; 285 citations), and "The processes and mechanisms of cardiac and pulmonary fibrosis" (Frontiers in Physiology, 2017; 268 citations). A Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (2008), American Heart Association (2009), and Society for Cardiac Angiography and Intervention (2010), he co-directs the Heart and Stroke Research Program at HMRI, chairs the Clinical Trials Subcommittee of the Hunter New England Human Research Ethics Committee, and leads the Executive Committee of the NSW Cardiovascular Research Network. Boyle supervises PhD students and junior doctors, contributing to advancements in rural acute coronary syndrome management.
