Dr. Anar Khan serves as a General Practitioner at the University of Otago Student Health Services in Dunedin, providing medical care to students and staff. She holds qualifications including an MSc, Postgraduate Diploma (Dip Grad), Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB), and an SCCA Advanced Certificate of Dermoscopy. Born in Dunedin, Khan pursued a diverse career path before entering medicine. She earned a degree in Biochemistry at the University of Otago, followed by an MSc in Computer Science, where her thesis focused on developing a text mining tool for biomedical applications as part of the Artificial Intelligence and Neural Networks Research Group. This led to roles as a genomic research scientist and science team leader at AgResearch, involving bioinformatics work affiliated with the University of Otago's Department of Biochemistry. Her contributions included co-authoring the paper 'BRINet: a BioResource Integration Network' in 2004, processing genomic data for Rachael Louise Ashby's PhD thesis on ryegrass endophytes, and presenting at the 26th Fungal Genetics Conference at Asilomar in 2011 on endophyte genomics. Additionally, as a fifth-year medical student in 2018, she participated in clinical training sessions recognized for awards in collaboration with the University of Otago and Southern District Health Board. She also co-authored the 2019 report 'Loneliness and Wellbeing Amongst New Zealand Veterans' through the University of Otago.
After completing her MBChB, Khan worked as a doctor at Dunedin Hospital for two years before specializing in General Practice. She has been mentored by Dr. Mark Bevin in skin cancer detection and surgery for the past two years. At Dunedin North Medical Centre, where she also practices, Khan offers full skin checks, mole checks, and skin surgeries, including GPSI skin cancer surgery. From January 2026, she plans to focus fully on Skin Cancer Medicine following Dr. Bevin's retirement. Prior experiences include roles as a health care assistant and volunteer ambulance officer. Khan enjoys music, reading, and learning about vehicles and space from her family.
