Dr. A K Fazlul Haque Bhuiyan serves as Professor in the Department of Animal Breeding and Genetics within the Faculty of Animal Husbandry at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh, and holds the position of Vice-Chancellor. He obtained his B.Sc. A.H. (Hons.) in 1981 and M.Sc. (A.H.) in Animal Breeding in 1983 from BAU, earning a University Prize for his undergraduate degree. In 1989, he completed his PhD in Animal Breeding at the University of London, UK, funded by a Commonwealth Scholarship. Bhuiyan pursued extensive postdoctoral research, including positions at Ryukoku University and Kyoto University, Japan (1994); Research Institute for the Biology of Farm Animals, Dummerstorf, Rostock, Germany (1998); Humboldt University of Berlin, Germany (1999); University of Nebraska at Lincoln, USA (2006); and University of Hohenheim, Germany (2016 and 2019). His career at BAU commenced as Lecturer from 1983 to 1986, followed by Assistant Professor (1986-1992), Associate Professor (1992-1997), and Professor since November 1997.
Bhuiyan's research specializes in animal breeding, genetic evaluation and characterization of indigenous livestock such as Red Chittagong cattle, Black Bengal goats, and native chickens, resilient farm animal genetic resources production, conservation through utilization, and livestock-led livelihood programs. He has published 250 works, comprising 246 journal articles and 4 book chapters, including 'Unraveling the Genetic Diversity and Population Structure of Bangladeshi Indigenous Cattle Populations Using 50K SNP Markers' (Animals, 2021), 'Polymorphisms in BMPR1B and INHβA genes are associated with litter size in indigenous sheep of Bangladesh' (Journal of Animal and Plant Sciences, 2023), and contributions to '863 genomes reveal the origin and domestication of chicken' (Cell Research, 2020). As Principal Investigator or National Coordinator, he has directed projects supported by USAID, USDA, World Bank, UNEP-GEF-ILRI, and Bangladesh's Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, focusing on genetic improvement, progeny testing, and policy for breed upgradation. He has supervised 84 MSc/MS and 20 PhD students. Among his honors are multiple Alexander von Humboldt Fellowships, JSPS Fellowship, Norman E. Borlaug Fellowship, Cochran Fellowship in Bovine Genetics, and ICAR/AusAID Young Scientist Scholarships.
