Salary: Non-Clinical: Grade 10RS (£65,336 - £75,439, discretionary range to £84,663 per annum) dependent on qualifications and experience. Clinical: Equivalent to grade E82 for consultants.
Duration: Fixed-term for 5 years in the first instance (up to 8 years)
Overview
The Medical Sciences Division at the University of Oxford, on behalf of the Nuffield Medical Trustees, is seeking to appoint exceptional early-career researchers under this new Fellowship. This fantastic opportunity is open to applicants worldwide who are looking to advance their academic careers at the world’s number 1 medical research institution (Times Higher Education (THE) Subject Rankings 2026).
The Fellowships are aimed at early-career researchers who are either transitioning to, or have recently achieved, full research independence, and who have outstanding potential to progress medical knowledge through outcomes that directly benefit human physical or mental health. Applicants may be from any medical research speciality, and may be clinically qualified or non-clinical.
These prestigious Fellowships provide up to £500,000 per year to cover salary for the Fellow and costs of their research programme. A vital and distinctive element of this fellowship is the requirement to build a collaboration with a partner research institution based in a Commonwealth country outside the UK.
The Role of a Nuffield Medical Fellow
Nuffield Medical Fellows will be full members of a department within the Medical Sciences Division. You will join a lively, intellectually stimulating and multidisciplinary community performing at the highest international levels in research, teaching, and innovation. While you are expected to dedicate the majority of your time to your Fellowship-funded research programme, you will have the flexibility to spend up to eight hours per week on clinical duties or other activities that enhance your career development.
Selection Criteria
Applicants must have:
- A PhD or equivalent postgraduate research qualification
- Significant post-doctoral research experience and a proven ability to lead an independent research programme, demonstrating independent thought leadership
- Evidence of producing high-quality and impactful medical research, for example through first or senior author publications, patents, or contributions to health practice or policy.
- Experience of line management/supervision and a strong track record of securing and managing external research funding, including as Principal Investigator.
- A clear 5-year research vision for your Fellowship that fits strategically with the research of a Department in the Medical Sciences Division.
- An existing collaboration (or plans to develop a collaboration) with a research institution in a Commonwealth country outside the UK.
- A commitment to promoting a positive research culture and demonstrating respect, courtesy and consideration in interactions with members of the University community.
Clinical Applicants Only
- Full and specialist registration (with a license to practice) with the GMC, or eligibility to register within 6 months of an interview.
- A Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or equivalent evidence.
