Dr. Zalmond C. Abbondanza serves as Professor III in the Mathematics department at Palm Beach State College on the Boca Raton campus. He earned his Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Florida in 2022. His dissertation, titled "A Design and Development Case Study of an Online Corequisite Module for a College Algebra Class," investigates the design and implementation of an online support module to enhance student outcomes in college algebra courses. This work reflects his focus on innovative instructional strategies in mathematics education.
Abbondanza has built a distinguished career at Palm Beach State College, progressing from Associate Professor, for which he received the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Excellence Award in 2016, to his current role as Professor III. In 2023, he completed the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE) Effective Online Teaching Practices course, earning a nationally recognized credential in online teaching excellence co-endorsed by ACUE and the American Council on Education. This credential acknowledges his application of evidence-based practices in areas such as course design, creating engaging learning environments, promoting active learning, developing higher-order thinking, and inclusive assessments. He has been active in faculty committees, including participation in the 2014 Mathematics Cluster meetings where he contributed to revisions of the MAT1033 final exam, course scheduling for developmental mathematics, and district-level general education discussions. Additionally, he mentored for the 2015 Math Awareness Week committee on the Boca Raton campus. In 2022, Abbondanza served as a panelist in the webinar "Early Insights from the Postsecondary Teaching with Technology Collaborative," discussing faculty use of technology to foster self-directed learning in online postsecondary STEM courses. His ongoing contributions to teaching excellence and professional development have positively impacted mathematics instruction at the institution.
